Were the Archer's of English or Dutch ancestry? There are arguments for both sides. Click here for excerpts from various publications that substantiate the Archer's being of Dutch ancestry. The one I find the most compelling is the website for New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Also, "Denizations, Naturalizations, and Oaths of Allegiance in Colonial New York." If John Archer took an oath of allegiance to the King of England, then I believe that would prove he was Dutch as only non-English inhabitants were required to swear allegiance and the Dutch held New Netherland until 1674. Of course, some would argue that this really wasn't our John Archer.
There has been an elaborate genealogy going back to Fulbert L'Archer, one of the companions of William the Conqueror. This genealogy originated, I believe, with Robert Bolton and is mentioned in his book, "History of Westchester County" published in 1848. William the Conqueror was the first Norman King of England and it is speculated that Bolton fabricated this ancestry as a way to "tie" the New York Archer's to an established and somewhat regal line. I've had this genealogy listed on my website but it's been removed.
Discovering that John Archer was Dutch has sent me 'back to the drawing board' for my Archer Ancestors page. Some Archer's have been removed until I can determine exactly how they fit into the Dutch line.
JOHN ARCHER/JAN ARCER was born between 1627-1635 in Amsterdam, Hollard and died October, 1685 in Westchester County, New York. He married CATHERINE CARLES/CARELES, February 15, 1659.

JOHN ARCHER II (JOHN ARCHER1) was born about 1660 in Westchester County, New York and died about 1725. He married 1) SARAH ODELL, daughter of WILLIAM ODELL. Their marriage license was applied for on October 7, 1686 but they weren't married until December, 1686. He married 2) MARY FOWLER, about 1715.

JOHN ARCHER III (JOHN ARCHER II2) was born between 1687-1693 in Fordham Village, New York and died between 1758-1766 in Eastchester, Westchester County, New York. He married ELIZABETH VALENTINE, daughter of JACOB VALENTYN.

RICHARD ARCHER (JOHN ARCHER2) was born about 1718 in Westchester County, New York and died in 1783. He married SARAH VALENTINE. She died between 1790-1800.

"The first internment on record in St. John's Cemetery occurred in 1783 and is that of RICHARD ARCHER." This was recorded in Church and Sunday-School Work in Yonkers: Its Origin and Progress, by Agnes E. Kirkwood, 1889.

She was living with her son, HENRY, in Hudson County, New Jersey when she died but is buried at St. John's Cemetery in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York.

CHARLES was born in Yonkers but moved to New York City early in life and lived there for forty years. He moved permanently to Yonkers about 1848.

On the 1850 census, it appears that ANTHONY'S daughter and granddaughter are living with him. ELIZABETH PRIMMER (36 yrs.) is shown along with PHOEBE J. PRIMMER (15 yrs.). His wife died in 1837 so she naturally wouldn't be shown. However, on the 1840 census, ANTHONY is shown with a female the same age as him and a female whose age would fit with PHOEBE, the supposed granddaughter. If SARAH, his wife, died in 1837, then who is this older female? Did ANTHONY remarry and did that wife die before 1850? Or is there a mistake on the 1840 census and the female's age is marked wrong? Could that female be his daughter, ELIZABETH? And is PHOEBE his daughter or granddaughter? In 1860, there is an ABRAM SUYDAM living with ANTHONY. ABRAM was PHOEBE'S husband and although PHOEBE isn't listed on the census, their two daughters are listed. By 1870 ANTHONY is dead and PHOEBE, ABRAM and the children are listed

I believe that MARY is the daughter of AARON RHEAD and ELIZABETH LYNT. MARY'S birth year fits the year that AARON'S oldest daughter was born and traditionally the first born daughter was named after the father's mother; AARON'S mother's name was MARY. The strongest evidence is on the 1850 census which shows JOHN ARCHER and MARY A. living in the AARON RHEAD household.

GEORGE H. ARCHER (RICHARD ARCHER 5) was born in October 25, 1826 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York and died June 11, 1876 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York. He married CATHERINE REED ROSS, June 23, 1861, daughter of CHARLES WILLIAM ROSS and MARY YOUNG REED. She was born January 19, 1839 in Saint John, province of New Brunswick, Canada and died July 18, 1906 in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York.

CATHERINE R. ARCHER is shown on the 1870 census with two children, GERTRUDE and WILLIAM H. On the 1880 census, she is shown with an additional son, GEORGE HAMMOND, which means she had three children born to her. But on the 1900 census, she is shown as having 2 children with 1 still living. By 1900 both of her sons, GEORGE HAMMOND and WILLIAM H., had died and GEORGE'S widow, CATHERINE MOORE, is living with CATHERINE R. so that would explain two children's deaths. GERTRUDE is shown on the 1910 census for Yonkers which shows she was living in 1900. The census taker made a mistake on the 1900 census. It should have stated that CATHERINE had 3 children and 1 was still living.

She was born July 10, 1825 in Coxsakie, Greene County, New York and died after 1880 in Chatham, Columbia County, New York.

I had received information stating that MARY GRACE MCVICKAR'S last name was MCCARTY. Because of what I found on census records, I don't believe that is correct. In 1880, SARAH PROSSER is listed in the AARON ARCHER household as mother-in-law to AARON. If she is mother-in-law to AARON, then she is MARY GRACE MCVICKAR'S mother. She is also living in the household in 1850 along with two daughters, CAROLINE PROSSER (7) and ISABELLA PROSSER (10) and another child, MARY MCVICAR (10). SARAH is listed in 1860 along with the two daughters but by 1860, MARY MCVICAR has disappeared. They are not listed on the 1870 census.
On the 1840 census for Greene County, New York, SARAH is married to ABRAHAM PROSSER and there is a female in the household between 15-20, which is the right age for MARY GRACE MCVICKAR. It appears that ISABELLA hadn't been born at the time the census was taken. I must conclude that SARAH was married to a MCVICKAR before ABRAHAM PROSSER and had MARY GRACE MCVICKAR; her husband died and she married ABRAHAM as her second husband. He dies between 1843-1850 and she never remarries.

On the 1860 census, MARIA is the name used for GEORGE BURGESS' wife. On the 1870 census, ANNA is the name that's used. I'm not sure which one is correct.

CATHERINE married PETER FRANCIS LANIGAN in 1902 and had four children by him: JOSEPH, b. 1903, WILLIAM, b. 1905, CATHERINE, b. 1907, and EDWARD JOSEPH LANIGAN, b. 1909. Both of CATHERINE'S children by GEORGE HAMMOND ARCHER (GERTRUDE ARCHER and GEORGE ARCHER) are living in the LANIGAN household in 1910. PETER LANIGAN has a son, PERCY (PIERCE FRANCIS) LANIGAN, b. 1899, also living in the household in 1910. PERCY is a son by PETER'S first wife.
