George Lerch, age 91, died on Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Belmont Nursing Home. He was born on March 12, 1912, in Freeport, Ill., to Frank and Elizabeth Lerch. George attended schools in Freeport. He served in the U.S. Army 33rd Division of Illinois and the 40th Division of California during World War II. While overseas, he was in the Pacific areas and participated in New Britain and Luzoa, the Philippines and Asiatic Pacific Ribbons. He was honored with a Bronze Star. George is survived by his sister, Margaret Lewis of Vallejo, Calif.; a nephew and niece, Fredie and Diane Lerch of Rockford, Ill.; and his sisters-in-law, Evelyn Lerch of Freeport, Ill., and Betty Lerch. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Johnnie Lerch of Freeport, Ill., James Lerch of Chicago, Ill., and Freddie Lerch of Rockford, Ill. Graveside services will be held at FOREST HILL CEMETERY, on Monday, March 8, 2004, at 2:30 p.m., with military rites conducted by the Madison Area Firing Squad.
