Hazel M. Rhead, age 98, of Menomonie, Wis., went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at Red Cedar Medical Center in Menomonie.
The former Hazel M. King was born on Sixth Street in Menomonie on September 28, 1908, to Cassius and Martha (Hall) King. As a child she lived in Montana, Knapp, Wis., and Hannibal, Wis., until she was 8 years old and then moved back to Menomonie.
Hazel married Nimmerd Rhead on Dec. 29, 1927, at Our Savior's Lutheran Parsonage. Hazel and Nim moved to Milwaukee for several years and moved back to Menomonie where they farmed for several more years, then started the Rhead Candy Company in 1934. Hazel was a housewife most of her life and enjoyed being a volunteer at the Dunn County Health Care Center for many years. She baked a million chocolate chip cookies and shared them with everyone. Hazel was a Cub Scout Leader for four years and in 1983 she fulfilled a long-standing dream of hers to graduate from High School. She was an avid Packer fan and loved her family and friends so very much.
Hazel is survived by her four children, Donald (Phyllis) Rhead of Ames, Iowa, Lois Rhead (Richard) Debee of Menomonie, Larry (Susan) Rhead of Menomonie and David (Patti) Rhead of Menomonie; nine grandchildren, Greg (Cheryl) Rhead, Jan (Larry) Nordeen, Karla (Joe) Burgart, Jeff (Alice) Debee, Lori Debee, Donna (Kurt) Rudiger, Carrie (Craig) Lecheler, Nicole (Mark) Soleimani, and Joe Rhead (Katie Brinker); 13 great-grandchildren and a very special family friend, Debbie Gates and other relatives and friends.
Hazel touched many, many lives and will be sadly missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Cass and Martha King, her husband Nim in 1982, two brother, Ralph "Bud" King in 1951 and George King in 1955, and a sister, Phyllis King Welke in 1979.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 19, 2007, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Menomonie, with Pastor Roger Benrud officiating. Family and friends are welcome at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday. Burial of the cremains will be in Christ Lutheran/Halvorson Cemetery in Menomonie following the memorial service. Olson Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Menomonie is serving the family.
