Lamar Ancestors

I don't know the parents of Uriah, Young and Samuel Lamar (Generation No. 5) or whether Thomas Lamar, b. 1640, connects with them or not, but I decided to include the Thomas Lamar descendants anyway. I put Uriah, Young and Samuel in Generation No. 5 only because their birth dates seem to fit there. I am convinced that these three men are related but where they came from is open for discussion.

As I state on my homepage, I can't guarantee 100% accuracy with regard to family associations or dates and I want to emphasize that statement for the Lamar's listed. Please contact me if you see any mistakes.

Samuel was a land owner in Warren County, Kentucky in 1805 beside Uriah and Young Lamar. He was living in Huff Township, Spencer County, Indiana as early as 1812. Mentioned in Little Pigeon Creek Baptist Church minutes as early as 1818.

Notes for URIAH LAMAR
I don't believe MARTHENA LAMAR SUTTON is a daughter of URIAH'S. If MARTHENA was a daughter of URIAH and HANNAH, then why isn't she shown on the 1820 or 1830 census as being in the household? Her age in 1820 was 3 yrs. old yet there is only a 10-18 year old female in the household who I believe to be HANNAH'S daughter, MARY POWELL. In 1830, MARTHENA would have been 13 yrs. old but in URIAH'S household there is a female between 20-30 and that female is POLLY RICHARDSON POWELL, widow of LITTLETON POWELL, son of HANNAH. So where is MARTHENA? If MARTHENA'S maiden name was LAMAR, then I believe she was another LAMAR'S daughter, not URIAH'S.

Notes for HANNAH MORTON POWELL
HANNAH was married to STEPHEN POWELL and lived in Georgia with their six children: EZEKIEL, b. 1796; WILLIAM, b. abt. 1799; LITTLETON, b. 1800; MARY, b. 1802; JAMES, b. abt. 1804; and an UNKNOWN DAUGHTER. In 1808(?) they decided to move to an area that would become Indiana and set out with others to that territory. Along the way, STEPHEN died in Kentucky and HANNAH married URIAH LAMAR. URIAH was already married to MARY "POLLY" BUTLER when he married HANNAH. When he settled in Spencer County, URIAH was fined for his bigamy and forced to choose which wife he wanted to keep. He chose HANNAH and he and MARY "POLLY" BUTLER were divorced in 1816.

Some researchers have designated James W. Lamar (b. 1847) as a son of William S. I believe James W. is a grandson of William S. On the 1850 census for Harrison, Spencer County, Indiana, James is listed with William Goble and Nancy with the last name of Lamar, not Goble. It is fact that Nancy Lamar married William Goble and it appears they never had children. I think Nancy might possibly have had a child out of wedlock or she was married to a man named Lamar who died. Either way it appears James W. Lamar is a son of Nancy's. He appears on the 1860 census for Clark, Perry County, Indiana as a household member of William S. But he also appears in the household of William Goble and Nancy. I think he might have been visiting his grandfather when the census taker was at the house and that's how he appeared on the census for William S.

Notes for PATSY LAMAR
Some researchers have PATSY married to BENJAMIN HENRY KELLUMS and I had her listed as married to this man as well. However, I'm not convinced she was married to KELLUMS. I had GREEN KELLUMS as son to PATSY but GREEN KELLUMS lived in Spencer County, Indiana and PATSY lived in Tennessee. Also, GREEN KELLUMS was born about 1827 and PATSY'S son, WILLIAM GARRETT, JR. was born in 1826 so GREEN couldn't be PATSY'S son.

Notes for LARKIN GARRETT
LARKIN GARRETT as a son of PATSY and WILLIAM, is based on circumstantial evidence, no actual proof. On the 1850 census for District 6, Maury County, Tennessee, all the GARRETTS shown are related. Since LARKIN is living in District 6, I'll assume he is related to those GARRETTS. In 1860, he is living with a 16 year old male named EDWIN. I believe this is really IRVIN, LARKIN'S brother, as the age is correct and the census taker just got the name wrong. (A common mistake on early census records.) He is also living very close to D. R. GARRETT, EDWARD GARRETT and MARTIN GARRETT, so again I think he is a brother to them. In 1870, LARKIN is living almost next door to MARTIN and in 1880, LARKIN is living next to DOCK R. GARRETT in Delta County, Texas.

I don't believe MARTHENA LAMAR SUTTON is a daughter of URIAH'S. If MARTHENA was a daughter of URIAH and HANNAH, then why isn't she shown on the 1820 or 1830 census as being in the household? Her age in 1820 was 3 yrs. old yet there is only a 10-18 year old female in the household who I believe to be HANNAH'S daughter, MARY POWELL. In 1830, MARTHENA would have been 13 yrs. old but in URIAH'S household there is a female between 20-30 and that female is POLLY RICHARDSON POWELL, widow of LITTLETON POWELL, son of HANNAH. So where is MARTHENA? If MARTHENA'S maiden name was LAMAR, then she was another LAMAR'S daughter, not URIAH'S.
