The Lanning's are not my direct ancestors but I'm including them on this site as a favor to my father. He grew up with the children of Irving Lanning (Generation No. 10) and asked me to please include the Lannings on my site, so I have. Irving Lanning married Irene Lyons, sister to my grandmother, Frances Lucille Lyons. So, the children of Irving Lanning were my first cousins, once removed. (I think that's the relationship; I'm never quite sure.)
A big thank you to Mike Lanning for sending me a copy of "The Lanning Family of Newtown, Queens County, Long Island, New York, and of Burlington, Hunterdon, Sussex, Warren, Mercer and Cumberland Counties, New Jersey and of North Carolina." This was actually not a published book, but the research notes of the renowed, accredited genealogist, Lewis Daniel Cook (1895-1981). Information that I've added to Generations 1-4 is from this publication. More will be added as I get the time.
Note
In some early records, this name is spelled as Laning instead of Lanning. I haven't done any research to find out if the name was originally spelled with one "n" or two but I have used the Lanning spelling in all my records.
JOHN LANNING was born in Wales and died before 1683 in Newton, Queens County, New York. He married ELIZABETH W. in 1665. She was born about 1645 in Wales and died 1688 in Newton, Queens County, New York.
Notes for JOHN LANNING
Taken from, "Early Settlers of Trenton and Ewing, Old Hunterdon County, N.J."
"There is a tradition in this family that three brothers, of the name of Lanning, came originally from Wales, and settled on Long Island. They removed, soon afterwards, to New Jersey. One bought land in the northern part, another in the southern section of the colony, and Robert, from whom the Lannings of this part of the colony descend, settled in Maidenhead, now Lawrenceville. His name is found among the grantees of the land on which to build a church in that village, in 1698-1699."
Children of JOHN LANNING and ELIZABETH are:
RICHARD LANNING (JOHN LANNING1) was born unknown in either Wales or Long Island, New York and died after 1742 in New Jersey. Spouse unknown.
Notes for Maidenhead, Burlington County, New Jersey
Maidenhead was founded in 1697 as part of Burlington County. In 1714, Maidenhead became a part of Hunterdon County and the town was legally incorporated in 1798. In 1816 the name Maidenhead was officially changed to Lawrenceville (for rather obvious reasons). When Mercer County was formed in 1838, the new boundaries took in Lawrenceville and that town has remained in Mercer County ever since. So, when RICHARD was born, he was born in Burlington County but his two siblings were born in Hunterdon County. The family didn't move, it was the county boundaries that moved.
Children of RICHARD LANNING are:

Mercer County was formed in 1838 from portions of Burlington, Hunterdon, Middlesex and Somerset Counties but when ELIJAH lived and died, Trenton was located in Hunterdon County. Today, Trenton is located in Mercer County.

Notes for DANIEL LANNING
Warren County, New Jersey was formed from Sussex County in 1824 and this family is buried in the Mansfield Woodhouse Presbyterian Church Cemetery just outside of Washington Township in Warren County, New Jersey. Many researchers records show they lived in Sussex County but the area where they are buried borders Hunterdon County, not Sussex County. I must conclude they lived and died in Warren County.
Children of DANIEL LANNING and FRANCES "FANNIE" BAINBRIDGE are:
JOHN LANNING (STEPHEN LANNING4) was born unknown and died unknown. He married RACHEL YOUNG, daughter of PATRICK YOUNG, in Warren County, New Jersey.

Notes for CATHERINE JANE LANNING
I was contacted by Linda Holm regarding a presumed daughter (CATHERINE JANE) of JAMES and SARAH. It is Linda's belief that CATHERINE was a daughter of JAMES. After reviewing what she sent and doing a little research on my own, I'm wondering if she may be correct. Click here to read supporting documentation for CATHERINE being a daughter of JAMES and SARAH.

He married MYRTLE EMILY LYONS in 1890 in Belvidere, Boone County, Illinois. She was born July 7, 1875 in Richland Center, Wisconsin and died December 20, 1963 in Boone County, Illinois.
Notes for MYRTLE EMILY LYONS
On the 1910 census, it's recorded that MYRTLE is the mother of 9 children, of which 7 are still living. Apparently, cemetery records for MYRTLE state that one of her sons was named GEORGE but I can't find a son named GEORGE on any census record (I haven't located the family on the 1900 census). I believe GEORGE died before 1910. I don't know who the other child is that died before that year.

STILES and CLARA D. He was born February, 1885 in Illinois and died unknown.
Notes for NINA ARVILLA LANNING
On the 1900 census for Spring, Boone County, Illinois, NINA is listed as a widow with one child, MARY and is living with her brother, ALBERT. However, on the 1910 census, NINA is married to CHARLES STILES and apparently has a son, EVERET, who is shown as 10 years old. There is no mention of MARY. I assume MARY died before 1910 and NINA was pregnant with EVERET when the 1900 census was taken; which would explain why NINA is shown as only having one child in 1900. I can't find any mention of an EVERET FITCH after 1920 so I assume he died before then.
